Bear, scratching

Along the Icefields Parkway between the Athabasca Glacier and Jasper, a black bear was caught by the camera scratching his back against a tree. Ahhh, that feels good.

The bears haven't been long out of their dens, but this one must have accomplished some serious eating. He's already sleek and glossy.

Female bears give birth and nurse during hibernation, so summer's devoted to gorging. Without a sufficient percentage of fat, fertilized eggs fail to implant and there are no cubs.
