Novelist Phyllis Ayame Whitney works at making the protagonist sympathetic

Image from amazon

When I begin a novel, I often have trouble making my main character sympathetic. She has serious problems, and sometimes she whines about them, or behaves badly.

After considerable work, I make changes so that in the end, she turns out to be the admirable person I intended.
